Regional Size and Scope
ERMI’s size provides an economy of scale that leads to a cost-effective approach to physician staffing. By keeping operational and overhead costs low, more resources are available for physicians, leading to improved patient care. Unlike larger national “mega-groups”, ERMI is based in western Pennsylvania, which allows for close and frequent contact with our partner hospitals. As part of UPMC, ERMI is backed by the resources and expertise of an internationally renowned integrated health system.

Recruiting a stable group of high quality physicians is a huge challenge for community hospitals. ERMI has a comprehensive physician recruiting and retention program that has led to dramatic improvements in staffing at our client hospitals. We commit significant resources on recruiting, including regular advertising in national/regional journals, an internet presence, displays at national emergency medicine and hospitalist medicine meetings, and a substantial database of regional physicians assembled over the past decade.
In addition to a stable group of high quality physicians dedicated to each hospital, our model provides the additional resource of dedicated “floater physicians” who are available on short notice to fill unexpected vacancies. These floater physicians are experienced, full-time ERMI physicians who are familiar with ERMI’s philosophy and provide a consistent high quality solution to temporary staffing shortages due to physician disabilities, military deployments, relocations, or retirements. ERMI places a strong emphasis on balancing physician workloads and maintaining a low patient-to-physician ratio.
ERMI’s medical directors and physicians are committed to the hospital’s success and serve on a variety of hospital committees, including medical executive, risk management, pharmacy, patient safety, critical care, disaster management, and education.
ERMI takes patient satisfaction seriously and works with our partner hospitals to improve patient satisfaction through education, monitoring, and feedback. Our medical directors review all patient complaints and work with our partner hospitals to resolve them quickly.
Our physicians receive patient satisfaction education at annual ERMI education conferences, which have included programs by the Studer Group. ERMI’s physician incentive program also includes patient satisfaction measures.
Quality Improvement Initiatives
ERMI has been a national leader for the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS). Our physicians receive individual PQRS feedback on a monthly basis and individual PQRS performance is included in the ERMI physician incentive plan.
We also work closely with our partner hospitals to improve hospital core measure scores and pay-for-performance initiatives. Our medical directors and physicians are experienced in focused performance improvement projects involving a wide range of initiatives including LEAN and patient throughput. ERMI works with our partner hospitals to identify performance improvement opportunities and tailor a custom approach based on the needs of the individual hospital.
Medical and Legal Services
Staying on top of legal issues can be time-consuming and costly. ERMI has a comprehensive risk management program that covers all aspects of emergency and hospital medicine. We provide all of our physicians with high quality occurrence-based (tail coverage) malpractice insurance. Our size and performance has led to lower malpractice insurance costs, which frees more resources for patient care.
ERMI also has expertise in EMTALA, compliance, HIPAA, and other areas pertinent to ensuring the highest quality patient care.
ERMI has a comprehensive program for documentation optimization and compliance. Our physicians receive monthly feedback on documentation performance, and individual performance metrics are included in our physician incentive plan.
Our extensive expertise in coding and billing leads to optimal collections. Our economy of scale enables us to provide coding/billing at lower cost, which provides more resources for direct patient care. ERMI also works closely with our partner hospitals to ensure appropriate documentation for optimal facility coding/collections.
ERMI has assisted numerous hospitals with the design of new emergency departments as well as the renovation of existing emergency departments. Our extensive experience helps our partner hospitals design an emergency department that promotes patient flow, ergonomic efficiency, and improved patient care.
