Advantages for Physicians

Corporate Structure

ERMI is a non-profit corporation.  Unlike many other emergency medicine groups, none of the patient care revenue generated by ERMI’s physicians are diverted to corporate shareholders or contract holders.  As a non-profit entity, we can focus on patient care and physician satisfaction.

Physician Coverage Ratios

ERMI believes that adequate physician coverage is necessary to promote quality patient care and physician satisfaction/longevity.  All of our Emergency Departments have generous physician staffing ratios that allow our physicians to deliver quality care.  We do not accept a “meat grinder” approach, and believe that a healthy balance of excellent compensation and strong coverage levels is best for patients and physicians.

Compensation and Benefits

ERMI offers an excellent compensation package with comprehensive benefits.  When combined with our generous physician coverage ratios, our compensation package offers a great combination of salary/benefits and lifestyle.
In addition to an excellent base salary, our comprehensive full time benefits package includes:

  • Occurrence based malpractice insurance with tail
  • High quality, paid health/dental/vision insurance for physician and family
  • $15,000 annual contribution from ERMI to your retirement plan, with the option to contribute additional pre-tax money
  • $3,500 CME allowance
  • Short term and long term disability insurance
  • Reimbursement of professional expenses: ACEP dues, state license fees, board certification/recertification fees, etc
  • Double pay for holiday shifts
  • Paid vacation
  • Flexible spending accounts
  • Discounted life insurance for physician and family

Our physicians also participate in the ERMI Physician Incentive Plan which provides additional income base on performance including productivity, documentation, and quality.

Flexible Work Options

ERMI offers numerous employment options to suit the needs of today’s physician. This flexibility allows our physicians to choose a balance of compensation and work that best fits their goals.

Full-time physicians receive a comprehensive benefit package and full incentive plan.  The full-time package is available to physicians who work a minimum annual commitment of 1,600 clinical hours, approximately 144 hours per month.

Permanent part physicians receive a partial benefit package and a prorated physician incentive plan.  The permanent part-time package is available to physicians who work a minimum annual commitment of 1,040 hours, approximately 84 hours per month.  This program has been popular among physicians who want a lower clinical workload, but still need high quality malpractice insurance and health insurance.

Full-time floater physicians receive a comprehensive benefit package and full incentive plan.  They also receive a high hourly rate for agreeing to work at numerous ERMI Emergency Departments in the region.

Casual or “moonlighter” physicians receive an hourly rate and paid occurrence-based malpractice insurance.  These physicians have no annual or monthly commitment.

Sites:  ERMI’s model is to employ physicians at one Emergency Department, which is identified in the physicians employment agreement.  Physicians will not be required to work at any site that is not agreed upon by the physician.  ERMI does offer split contracts between 2 sites as well as “internal moonlighting” options for physicians to want to supplement their primary work site with other options.

Because ERMI serves many hospitals in the region, physicians enjoy the flexibility of working in a system that lets them choose the emergency department setting that best matches their career goals without changing their employer or leaving the area.

Career Growth Opportunities

ERMI offers a variety of career growth opportunities for our physicians.  Numerous opportunities for Medical Directorships, Assistant Directorships, and EMS Directorships have been filled internally by EMRI physicians.  Our relationship with UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine also provides for additional leadership opportunities such as teaching, IT, quality, and risk management.

The Communities

All ERMI sites are easily accessible to the city of Pittsburgh's vibrant arts and cultural scene, as well as our world famous professional sport teams.

In addition to abundant nearby outdoor recreational opportunities, the area’s low cost of living and quality schools, colleges and universities make Pittsburgh and ideal place to call home.
